Race, data surveillance, and artificial intelligence: a discussion with activist/scholar Chris Gilliard, PhD

Equity Unbound is pleased to invite you to another Studio Visit with special guest Chris Gilliard who is currently a Professor of English at Macomb Community College. His scholarship concentrates on privacy, institutional tech policy, digital redlining, and the re-inventions of discriminatory practices through data mining and algorithmic decision-making, especially as these apply to college students.

Chris is currently developing a project that looks at how popular misunderstandings of mathematical concepts create the illusions of fairness and objectivity in student analytics, predictive policing, and hiring practices. Chris is a Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center Visiting Research Fellow and member of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry Scholars Council and the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project advisory board.
